UNICEF Media Award 2016
Sudhakar was awarded the UNICEF Media Award in 2016 for a series of stories he had written on discrimination on the grounds of gender. One of the stories was about a girl who committed suicide unable to subject herself to the shame of defecating in the open. The report published in the Deccan Chronicle in January 2016 was headlined ‘Rekha had pleaded with dad for a toilet’.
The story was shortlisted as the best out of 172 media stories and was awarded the UNICEF Media Award. The award was given for “effectively bringing out the importance of a toilet for the dignity of a girl”.
