Inter Student Commits Suicide Due to Lack of Toilet
Even to this day, there are many suffering in the country due to lack of proper toilets. In 2016, Sudhakar Reddy brought this issue to a world stage when he documented the suicide of a 17-year-old intermediate student, K Rekha. Sudhakar drew a personal picture of the humiliation Rekha felt in living without a toilet which compelled the powers-to-be to act immediately and prevent more such tragedies.
The story was shortlisted as the best out of 172 media stories and was awarded the UNICEF Media Award for “effectively bringing out the importance of a toilet for the dignity of a girl”.
