Special on Wages Inside Prisons

Prisoners Deprived of Compensation

In January 2007, Sudhakar wrote an exclusive in The Deccan Chronicle about the exploitation of inmates in prisons. Aided by the complaints filed by the rights activists, Sudhakar exposed how jails such as Cherlapally Jail earn Rs 8 lakhs per year from the sale of products made by the inmates but pays only Rs 10 to Rs 15 per day to them.

Several factory units in these prisons make carpets, soaps, and phenyl products. Sudhakar’s article showed how prisoners who were supposed to earn around Rs 6,000 a year from their work were earning less than what they deserved.
