Reporting on Culture of Female Infanticide
Tribals starve girl children to death
Sudhakar Reddy’s report ‘Parents Starve Tribal Girls to Death’ was one of the biggest stories of that year, which was published in Deccan Chronicle and Asian Age papers. Apart from earning high readership, the report also gained the attention of the National Human Rights Commission (India’s apex body for protection and promotion of human rights), which sent a showcause notice to the then Government of Andhra Pradesh, seeking an explanation. The Department of Health, along with NGOs like CFCA stepped into the picture to put an end to the barbaric practice of female infanticide by creating community awareness sessions, setting up local schools and providing scholarships to girls.
